A friend and I drove up to Pinnacles in the rain today, and it was just beautiful. So here are some photos.
What amazed me about this is how blue the peaks are. I think that was because of the rain, the lichen was all open and showing its color. In the summer heat–this looks very different.
Here are a few without comment:
I mean, what could a comment add, right?
But on the next one–iPhoto came into its own on this one. I love peering through tunnels into the light like this, but it’s really hard to get pictures. But with a bit of quick processing, voilá, you actually get some of the effect.
Here are some more without comment–except you can tell I love the moss.
The next ones require some commentary. We decided to head back out to the coast via Arroyo Seco and Carmel Valley roads, and as we got toward the top–the rain turned into snow! I pulled over and hopped out to try to catch some pictures–I mean, how often does it snow along the California coast in February? These don’t really do it justice–the flakes were huge, big beautiful things floating silently down in profusion, but it was dark enough that mostly you just see streaks. Here are three attempts:
I realized at this point I was getting streaks instead of flakes, so decided to try one with the flash. This is what I got. You can see a couple of actual in-focus flakes–think of all the rest of the white bits as more of the same, and you’ll have an idea of what it was like.
By the time we got to the top, there must have been at least an inch, maybe two, accumulated on the road, and the landscape was just beautiful. California oaks with snow on them–a sight I never thought to see. But I didn’t see a good spot to pull over for more pictures, so those are all I got.
But altogether–a good trip, rain, snow, and all.
With all that green, I was expecting a stray leprechaun!
Beautiful pics.
