It rained here most of the afternoon, so when it seemed to clear around three, I dragged myself out of the recliner to take Scamp for her afternoon walk. When we go down to the usual, I parked and hopped out of the car to try to capture this:
That almost does it justice.
Literally less than a minute later, taken from maybe 50 feet from where the first was taken:
You may not be able to tell–this one was edited, the first is not–but already the light had shifted. If you look closely, you can see there’s sun shining directly onto the poplars; 20 seconds later, in the second shot, it was gone. It’s been awhile since we had what I call wait a minute weather around here, but it was very much in evidence on this walk.
When we got a short way down the path, I glanced over to my left and saw this.
By this time, it was starting to rain a bit, so the rest of the pictures were taken while juggling an umbrella.
I realized the landscape photo wasn’t capturing enough, so tried a couple of panorama shots.
Just to clarify–a full 180-degrees of double rainbow. The inner one was very vivid–none of the pictures quite do it justice.
Something you can’t see in the panorama shots is that the bright, inner rainbow was actually in front of the trees.
From where I was standing, this end landed just in front of the poplars on the hill. When I had first noticed it, it was ON the poplars, but I had moved down the path a bit when I took the above, and the rainbow shifted accordingly.
I tried to get it all with a short video.
Here are a couple shots that show the rainbow in front of trees phenomenon a bit better. I was quite a bit further down the trail when I took these; you can see how the ends of the rainbow had shifted along with my changed vantage point.
By the time I got to the end of the path–not far from where the last two picture were taken–the light show was over, dark clouds had covered all, and it was raining heavily. But I felt amply rewarded for having gone out.
Such a beautiful combo of colors and light and shadow. I have never captured the magic of a rainbow with my cell phone camera. You did a great job doing so! It hasn’t rained here today(since last night anyway) but it’s getting chilly. Glad to have my flannel sheets on the bed. Hope you are feeling good these days!

The experience was magical. We seem to finally be getting our usual fall weather here—it’s been unseasonably warm and sunny. I’m feeling much better—my energy level is up and my PHN on my scalp is improving, though it still bothers me most days. Like you, and most people, I miss being able to interact with other people. For an introvert like me, it’s surprising how much the pandemic has restricted my usual activities.
