Having our second heat wave this year, so got ready to head to the beach. Decided to take the bike so I could ride down around the point at Seven Devils. Also wanted to see if Scamp could keep up and maybe learn to run with the bike as CJ did.
It was very windy at the coast, not at all surprising on the Oregon coast in the summer, especially when it’s heating up inland. Watched this guy awhile as he struggled to get parachute and board both out to the water.
I was concerned that he’d get out there and not be able to get back in, but it soon became apparent that he had it under control.
Anyway, I headed off down the beach, into the wind, on the bike. Scamp seemed to be freaked out by the bike; she wouldn’t come near it, but she also didn’t want to lose me, so while I rode on the hard packed sand close to the water, she ran along on the softer sand up near the cliff. I was AMAZED at how fast she ran, at least if the bike’s speedometer was to be trusted! She’s just a small dog, only 5 months old, and our speed varied from about 7.5 mph to 10.9 mph (~12 kph-17.4 kph for the rest of the world.)
I was worried about pushing her too hard, and I wasn’t sure how anxious the whole thing might be making her, so we only went out about half a mile to the rocks and rested awhile there. I tried using treats to get her to approach the parked bike, but she only got to about 15 feet away and wouldn’t come any closer. She was happy to come to me, as long as I stayed away from the bike.
On the way back, it was the same–she ran up by the cliff and ahead of me most of the way back. Here’s a short video I managed to take–not an easy feat while riding the bike. Look to the left to spot her.
SO–she can definitely run with the bike, I just have to get her over her wariness of it.
The whole run out and back only lasted 15-20 minutes, so after loading everything back in and on the car, we drove over to Whiskey Run and walked out the the rocks there, another quarter mile or so one way. This is peering over a rock past the point, looking at Seven Devils beach.
Here’s another couple of the rocks there.
We saw several people parasailing or windsurfing or whatever it is on our way back.
It must be exhilarating, because it sure looks like a lot of work getting everything out there.
Scamp was at least somewhat tired after all this. She scrambled up into the car while I was getting out my sandals to change for the drive home, and slept all the way home. Sadly (for me), happily (for her and sorta for me), “tired’ did not last and she’s ready to go again.
I think what those folks are doing is called “kiteboarding.” I saw a lot of that on the Columbia River during my 2008 walk, right around the appropriately named Viento, which was indeed very windy—a perfect spot for that sort of activity.
Okay, time for a checkup… Yup. Dawg still looks cute.

I hope Scamp adjusts to the bike, but he seems to be able to keep up nicely. Beautiful photos!
