Not as wet as further north, or as I gather parts of England are, but wetter than the past couple of years.
This is the entry to the little county park where I often walk CJ. It always floods in wet years, but this is the highest I’ve ever seen the water there.
Here’s a little different perspective that shows how high the water is on the sign.
Here are a couple taken from the riverside walk downtown.
That’s the boat ramp on the other side. Usually.
Here’s the town park. ‘Nother boat ramp over there on the left.
A couple of views of Winterlake just northwest of town. Someday I need to take pictures from the same spot during the summer so I can show the contrast.
CJ hasn’t been walked for a week, and didn’t get much of a walk today, what with the rain. I decided to drove on over to the coast–here’s what it looks like at Seven Devils. I couldn’t get down to the beach without doing some serious wading, so she didn’t get walked there either.
Just out of curiosity decided to go out to Whiskey Run. Normally people use the driveway below to drive out onto the beach–I have the feeling it’ll be awhile before that’s possible again. You can’t really tell from this picture, but the channel carrying the water down is about 15-18″ deep.
CJ and I were able to clamber down to the beach there. Well, I clambered–CJ was more agile and graceful. Not much actual beach available–the tide was pretty high, and some of the waves were coming nearly all the way up. Though based on the logs and other detritus, the water’s been higher in the recent past.
The waves were bringing in a lot of foam. I ended up clambering (again) along the dunes you see to the right, because the waves were occasionally still making it all the way up. CJ kept waiting and looking at me expectantly, like “What’s taking you so long? Let’s go!” I needed my hiking stick–If I’d had that I could have kept up with her, right? Right?
Here’s another view of flooded fields beside the highway on the way home. Water was maybe three feet below the road here, maybe less.
So far, pretty much just normal for here–high, but not abnormally so. Although I did overhear someone in the hardware store say it’s predicted to go seven feet over flood level today, and that that’s the worst since 1971. Still nowhere near as bad as apparently it is further north. But there’s more rain to come–we are due a short break on Tuesday and maybe Wednesday, then more rain in the forecast as far out as it goes. So stay tuned.
