I’ll sleep somewhere in Canada tonight. Just where remains to be figured out.
The past few days have been intensely (for me) social–a day in Seattle with my half-sister and her partner, an afternoon in Bellingham with a couple of second cousins (with whom I share, they tell me, a sister-like relationship), and a day with my former college roommate (and her wife) who I hadn’t seen for 40 years (give or take–neither one of us could quite place in time the last time we’d seen each other, though we do both remember the visit.) All good.
The visit with the ex-roommate has been interesting. There were memories we shared, and could confirm for each other; there were others that one or the other of us had that the other didn’t. A couple of those that she shared with me I now think I at least somewhat remember, aided for some by her having pictures that included me. Boy, was I young. I mean, of course I was–but still, seeing it makes that fact more real. And getting to know her wife has been a pleasure. She’s a very interesting–and skilled–woman.
Cats have been very active at night. The past couple of nights I’ve been able to escape to a guest apartment to get some sleep, but that won’t be available tonight. I figure my only hope is to keep them awake as much as possible during the day so they’ll be more inclined to sleep at night. Yesterday they slept all day and woke up and got active around dusk, just as is proper for nocturnal animals. We’ll see how successful I will be at changing that pattern. Bad things could result if we don’t find an accommodation that works. My faith in the cat cot (for those not my FB friend, that’s a cot tent purchased for something to put them in at night outside the van) is waning. I set it up the first night here, but the wind came up so I brought the cats back into the van somewhere around 1:00-1:30 am; they won and sent me up to the apartment by 2:30. Didn’t get a lot of sleep that night. But the cat cot ended up on its side, blown around in the driveway; I don’t know if it’s still usable, i.e. will still contain the cats. Plus, it’s going to get cold at night up in the Canadian Rockies; will I have the intestinal fortitude to leave the cats outside in the cold with only a rain fly to hold in the heat for them? I might; I do get desperate when I get sleep-deprived.
So soon I will go pick up my camping companion, who got in to Bellingham by train last night but kindly stayed in a motel rather than asking me to pick her up past my bedtime, and we will rearrange things to include her stuff and head for the border. I’m not likely to post another blog entry while in Canada, even though I may be there a month, unless I get to a campground with good wifi; the Verizon travel plan is generous for calls and texts but sucks for data, which is mostly what I want it for. Maybe the next one will have pictures; this morning I don’t want to take the time to upload them.
Bye (waves). See you later, blog.
