With a certain amount of fear and trembling, I put 50% down on an iPad yesterday. The G3 is supposed to come out this Friday at 5:00, but since I’m going through a retailer, not an Apple store, they may not get theirs until Saturday or even Monday. It’ll still be quicker than pre-ordering online, though–those won’t ship until May 7 now.
The fear and trembling comes from the fact that you need a newer computer than the faithful iBook upon which I am typing this to work with the iPad. First you have to initialize it, and then you’ll want to transport stuff to and from it, and–theoretically at least–you can’t do that unless you have OS 10.5.8 or later, which I couldn’t install on my laptop even if I wanted to go that route. I’m working on solutions–one of which consists of buying an iMac now rather than later. I’d rather wait until my credit cards are down to zero balance before springing, and frankly upgrading one’s computer is a pain in the a** what with compatibility issues and having to invest not only in the hardware but also in a bunch of new software, and then the learning curve of figuring out how to run it all and configure it to your own preferences, and one learning curve (with the iPad) is plenty at one time–but still I’m considering it.
Anyway, one way or another, I should soon be able to post from. . .oh, say, the beach, or the car, or a coffeeshop, or wherever, from the iPad. I may do that, just because. Go out and sit in the car in the driveway and write a post. Heh.
