Yes, I’m lusting after an iPad (and hereafter in this post, I shall not be capitalizing the P. My fingers can barely coordinate these days to capitalize the first letter of a sentence, let alone the second letter in a word in the middle of a sentence.)
So far I have resisted, on accounta if I’m going to do this thing, I’ll get the 3G version, which isn’t out yet. My financial justification for this is it will get me phone access when I’m on the road, and I’ll be able to pay for it only when I’m actually using it, and the rates for voice plus data will be reasonable (the combination seems to go above $100/month–$1200/year–for cell phones.)
I’m still not absolutely sure I’m going to get it, because opinions seem to differ out there in the internet village (intville? May I coin a word?) as to whether it can work. Skype is so far iffy, apparently–they have a version that works on the ipad, but not over 3G–it’s wifi only at this point. iCall may do the trick–but icall quality seems to be somewhat questionable. On the other hand, apparently Apple bought it, so they’ll probably support it. And I’ll want Bluetooth, or at least a headset, for privacy.
But that’s not my only reason for the lust. I think it may be the perfect thing for when I’m on the road (assuming phone function). Good enough as a basic computer (though I have to say that so far I’m not impressed with the word processing or spreadsheet apps Apple is selling for it–I’d rather pay more and get more), internet access, GPS or at least google maps, ereader. And I can finally join in the other tech fun–games, movies, music, hours spent shopping for apps, etc. I may even use it for work (what a thought).
And if I do get it, and it does work for when I’m out and about–my next lust will be for a real desktop Mac with one of those huge screens for home. . . .
Meanwhile–lust, lust, lust. . . Writing about it is a poor substitute for buying, getting, owning, playing with it–but it’ll have to do for now.
