I decided this one was worth its own post.
This dog often hops up in trees when we’re out walking (she’s also the one that’s most likely to actually catch something–there’s a definite relationship between those two facts.) Anyway–when I brought up the background in Photoshop, the result was this sort of surreal landscape.
The thing that’s amazing to me is that, other than balancing the light so both background and foreground are visible, it’s all real–no special effects. Or maybe I’m just amazed because I didn’t see it coming–I was so intent on trying to catch the dog (who doesn’t often hold still for me) that I didn’t notice the background. There’s probably some kind of metaphor for life in there somewhere, but I’ll leave it alone.
That is kind of surreal. That’s a good-looking dog, too.

Hello, Jean,
Iris led me to your blog. The background, more like setting to me, seems beautiful, peaceful and life supporting; not at all sureal. Very real, as in real life. The phrase which you decide to leave alone, ” … I didn’t see it coming-I was so intent of trying to catch the dog (who doesn’t often hold still for me) that I did’t notice the background.” is my reason for posting this comment. So much of life as we know it, “I didn’t see it coming, I was so intent on trying to catch ( ), which does not often (wait) for me, that I didn’t notice where I was, where I it is that I had arrived. Trying to catch ( ) had brought me to a peaceful and life affirming place.” You clearly left it alone, I cannot. Thank you.

What a lovely comment–thank you.
Yes, I was thinking something along those lines, but you’ve said it much more poetically than I could have.
I’m not sure why I see the landscape os sort of surreal. It may have something to do with why I find backlighting so compelling–there’s just something about looking through something that’s outlined by light, into something else–anyway, it gets me every time, only usually my attempts to catch it in a photo are utter failures.
